Resources

How long will your puppy be alone in a typical day? Think of him as a toddler.

Supplies you  will need: a washable donut-type bed to cuddle in, a crate to keep him safe, an X pen which functions as a play pen, a litter pan if you choose to have him continue to potty inside, and a water dish. You will need food dishes and toys, of course, but they shouldn’t be left with a puppy all the time because he will learn to destroy them, not play with them.

PLEASE enroll in puppy training classes as soon as possible. It is great for both of you.

Here are three great resources from AKC. The first is a puppy class offered at Petco stores called AKC Star Puppy, and the second is Canine Good Citizen.

Always be careful outside. Toy Fox Terriers are very small and  make great meals for coyotes, owls, falcons, and hawks.

For people who are interested in starting to show and perhaps even breed Toy Fox Terriers to show in American Kennel Club shows, please do your homework first. I’ll say this in the plainest way that I can. This is not a business where one can make money. This is a true challenge to improve a breed to the best it can be physically and emotionally - so that we have stable, confident little dogs who have long, healthy, pain-free lives.

Each of the dogs I allow to be adopted/sold have not only seen by the vet several times for examinations, but have been health tested for genetic diseases PLL (Primary Lens Luxation), SCA (Spinocerebellar Ataxia), CHG (Congenital Hypothyroidism with Goiter) and Patellas (no luxation). Between the cost of exams, puppy shots, care and feeding of the babies, stud fees, cost of care of the momma dog who may have had a C-section… well you know the rest.

A direct quote from the AKC website, “ Part art, part science and total devotion, breeding is exciting and challenging.” Then you cross your fingers and hope that nothing goes wrong.

You can download an app called AKC.TV on your phone or computer and watch a variety of programs from how to choose a breed that is compatible for you to how to train your dog to the Royal Canin Dog Show.  You can watch particular breed judging as well. This is a good start to get your “feet wet” when looking at how dogs are shown.
